A cast of a thought

2021

Kasper De Vos

Kasper De Vos’s work often arises organically, from things he finds. This sculpture comes from the discovery of a thick walnut shell with a hole in it, probably made by an animal.

The artist was intrigued by the growth of the shell, which also determines the shape of the nut. He first experimented with casting bronze walnuts based on found shells. He then modeled the (enlarged) walnuts himself and executed them in bronze. The title refers to the organic growth of an idea: a thought that is literally fixed in bronze.

In the studio, the sculpture was very present, but here in nature it becomes smaller again. You can see all sorts of things in it: the nut, but also a kind of bone, brain, or something else entirely.

In this sculpture, De Vos has captured a tranquil, monumental version of one moment in the natural growth of a walnut. At the same time, he has cast the end point of his train of thought in bronze. However, with this end point also comes a new beginning. The meaning of the work is not closed like the shell of a walnut: new associations provide space for new meanings.

The sculptures and installations of Belgian contemporary artist Kasper De Vos are a joyful play of materials, techniques, things, and thoughts. His work evokes stories without being illustrative or pedantic. It is a kind of thinking with forms, which in turn makes us dream.
