Bali

1977

Phillip King

This large sculpture creates space and movement. Each of the curved forms suggests an inside and an outside, and together they create a dynamic whole that looks different from every vantage point. There is no front, back or sides, just an exciting composition that challenges gravity with a touch of humor.

In the curves you can feel how the artist placed pieces of slate in metal bands during the design process, searching for the perfect balance.

The way the curved forms grow toward each other from the ground plane evokes a strong sense of movement. The dynamism is transferred from one element to another. Color also breathes life into this sculpture.

British sculptor Phillip King started with smaller works in clay or plaster. Beginning in the 1960s, he created large abstract sculptures in idiosyncratic colors. He brought innovation to British sculpture by experimenting with materials such as steel, slate, fiberglass, and plastic. From 1993, he explored the possibilities of ceramics for large sculptures in Japan.
