Corpora Selecta

2018

Rein Dufait

This is Rein Dufait’s first sculpture in bronze. The material is heavy, yet the work looks light and cheerful. The process of making was decisive for the whimsical form. The artist dug holes in the sand and filled them with cement or mortar. In this work, he experimented for the first time with sand casting in bronze. The imprints of his digging fingers and shells are visible traces of the making process. Dufait welded the different parts together, creating a lively sculpture that is closely related to natural forms.

The earth plays a central role in the cycle of life and death: from germination to burial. Dufait creates his work by digging in the earth, making casts of the cavities and working the results. The natural and the creative come together: shells from the beach at Ostend and the artist’s fingerprints.

Belgian contemporary artist Rein Dufait explores the gray zone between nature and culture. Although sometimes constructed of heavy and unwieldy materials, his works can be associated with fragility and transience.
