Double Twisting
2021
Roberta Gigante
The mixture of gasses in the neon tubes of “Double Twisting” is responsible for the surprising, changing appearance of the work. The colors created by the gases, red and blue, change under the influence of the temperature. In warm weather, the sculpture turns blue. When it is freezing, it turns completely red. At other temperatures, the colors mix in endless variations.

The work was inspired by the ancient symbol of the ouroboros: a snake biting its own tail. It is a reference to eternal renewal, but also to body and spirit as one. At the same time, it depicts the circle of the rising and setting sun. Artist Roberta Gigante is fascinated by the cycle of day and night.
This artwork looks different each time you visit the museum. Its colors vary according to atmospheric conditions. The artwork allows us to read not only the cycle of day and night, but also that of the seasons: the warmer it is, the bluer it becomes.
Italian contemporary artist Roberta Gigante’s work is highly diverse: from sound installations and interventions in public spaces to sculptures with glass balls, neon sculptures, and classic-looking works on paper. Her works are subtle, playful, and light.
