One and a half

1967

Kim Lim

Here we literally see one and a half steel plates in a striking red color. The plates are folded: sharp and angular, they lie on the grass. They have no natural, organic form, but at the same time they allude to undulations in the landscape.

The artwork has no front or back: you have to move around it to fully experience it. In the simple forms we see Kim Lim’s pursuit of sobriety, her search for the essence of an idea. In this search, the space between the material is as important as the forms the artist creates with the material itself. Light, shadow and rhythm are indispensable elements in her sculpture.

Kim Lim was a Singaporean-British sculptor and graphic artist of Chinese descent. She found inspiration in art from East and West, as well as in the ripple of desert sand or waves blown by a sea breeze. Her attention to the smallest details of curve, line and surface aligns with minimalism.
