Philippe Van Snick

It takes time to appreciate this work. It is quite austere and simple, but has great poetic power.

Philippe Van Snick used the existing, somewhat outdated water feature at the Braem Pavilion as a starting point. The bottom is covered with large black pebbles. Fine air bubbles arise from under the pebbles, rising to the surface with a splash and causing the water to ripple. Ten columns scattered across the surface of the pond produce the bubbles. At ten-second intervals, the bubbles rise one by one, just until all the columns operate together for ten seconds. After ten seconds of rest, the process starts over again. Pause for a moment and enjoy the play of ripples on the water.

The movement in Philippe Van Snick’s work is minimal. The surface of the water changes very subtly. Only when you stand still and take your time does the cyclical movement become perceptible.

Belgian artist Philippe Van Snick trained as a painter. Starting in the 1970s, his work became more complex, using a variety of media. The analysis, creation, and experience of space formed the core of his artistic practice, always with simple, austere forms and constructions.
