Alik Cavaliere
At the edge of Middelheim, you find yourself in a seemingly forgotten street with a row of stores facing a blank, bare wall. It is not a sculpture that you can walk around, but an environment that surrounds the visitor.

The artist calls upon his audience to give meaning to the work: you can wander around his installation, where you are invited to give free rein to your thoughts and memories. His work seems familiar and alienating at the same time. This mysterious character was important to him.
Cavaliere’s installation takes you into a stream of associations, memories, and meanings. The artist worked like a film director, using objects and materials to tell stories. Together with the viewer, he sought to create labyrinths of thought in which to get lost.
Alik Cavaliere was an Italian artist. The meaning of life, freedom, nature, and history are recurring themes in his work. He worked in a wide variety of materials and media from the 1970s onward, and was one of the first artists to create an “environment.” Above all, he sought to encourage his audience to reflect.
