to hold, to carry, to walk, a sound

2021

Maika Garnica

This work consists of a bronze ring with a diameter of 330 centimeters: twice Maika Garnika’s body height. During tours, a group of ten people can move the work according to the artist’s instructions. That action produces a subtle sound.

For the artist, sound is an essential element in exploring the relationship between the object and her own body, or that of the spectator.

Through her work, Garnica brings people together. The way she interacts with her sculpture and the public results in a new form of communication in which language is secondary.

Belgian contemporary artist Maika Garnica takes sculpture and sound as a starting point for exploring the relationship between artist, viewer, and space. The objects she creates and with which she plays consist of different materials, such as bronze, metal, ceramic, and wood. Variations in context and interaction constantly shift the nature of her work: from sculpture to sound object or tool.
