On the market square, she created a carpet of flowers and herbs, and on the façade of the city hall she hung 67 flags in the same colors as the carpet of plants. The swirling composition of color fields is based on the floor motif of Antwerp’s Museum Plantin-Moretus. For AMVK, it represents a fictional city map: an abstract, colorful image of the city with various districts, quarters, and neighborhoods.
The installation was temporary: visitors could take the flowers and herbs with them after a few days. AMVK donated the flags to Middelheim Museum.
“For All Seasons” is a work that has led several lives. Originally part of a larger installation, it has been given a second life here at Middelheim Museum. The wind permanently sets the colored surfaces in motion. Each year, at the artist’s request, the flags are replaced and recycled for the museum shop.
The extensive oeuvre of Belgian contemporary artist Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, or AMVK for short, is quite diverse. At the same time, her work is always recognizable: colorful, layered, feminist, and socially critical. She explores the interfaces of art, science, politics, and social themes.
