Annunciazione

1957

Umberto Mastroianni

The bronze of the “Annunciation” is not polished smooth, but left rough and raw, giving the sculpture an expressive look. The interplay of shapes and patterns gives the artwork a powerful look and brings rhythm and dynamism to the sculpture.

According to Umberto Mastroianni, watching the movement in this sculpture creates “spiritual liberation” in the viewer. As for the meaning of the title, the artist made no pronouncements; this is something he says you have to discover for yourself.

Italian sculptor and graphic artist Umberto Mastroianni created abstract sculptures in bronze and natural stone. The solid forms of his early work later gave way to more open-ended structures. In the human figures with which he attracted international attention in the 1950s, Mastroianni harked back to early Cubism and Futurism.

The artist has chosen not to create a recognizable representation of horse and rider: instead he focuses on movement. The rhythm of the stacked volumes creates tension in the artwork, expressing the dynamics of man and animal.
