"L"

1968

Augustin Cardenas

The organic form of the “L” recalls the soft contours of a human body without really allowing us to recognize a human figure in it. The smoothly polished, harmonious and flowing form is typical of Augustín Cárdenas’s marble sculptures. He executed the work in taille direct: that is, he carved the sculpture directly into the marble.

Cárdenas’s organic sculptures seem solidified in time, as if they could transform at any moment into a more human or animal form. There is an agile energy in this stone.

Cuban sculptor and painter Augustín Cárdenas joined the Surrealists in Paris in 1955. He found inspiration in American, European, and African cultures in his search for what he himself called “ideal forms.” His sculptures are abstract, yet their titles and shapes often contain references to figuration. Totems, shells, women, couples, horses … are all recurrent motifs. He worked in wood, Carrara marble, granite, and bronze.
