Bidon Bleu
2012
Roman Signer
“Blue Barrel” is part of a series of actions in which Roman Signer launches objects using a ramp. The performance at Middelheim Museum took place on May 26, 2012. From a height of 15 meters and over a distance of about 35 meters, a metal barrel filled with water rolled down a ramp at high speed and exploded against a concrete wall. What you see now is a remnant of that action. A lasting reminder of the moment for those who were present, and a stimulus to the imagination for those who were not.

Signer is fascinated by the power of natural elements, which he explores in a playful way. The exploding barrel of water in “Blue Barrel” refers to water as the giver of life, but also as an untamable force. The paradisiacal and dangerous aspects of nature come together in a single image.
Roman Signer is a Swiss contemporary sculptor and draftsman. The austerity of the materials he works with contrasts sharply with the imaginative elaboration of his projects. With a limited number of recurring elements, Signer creates a world that continues to surprise. His performances often explore the limits of danger.
