Fenster

1993

Isa Genzken

Isa Genzken placed two window sculptures among the shrubbery of the park. These “windows” are not ideal for looking through. They are too high, and without a building around them there is not even a reason to want to.

So the windows are not only there to look through, but to look at. They form a frame for the trees and branches, but in fact they mainly draw attention to themselves. The play of daylight on the semi-transparent resin frames reinforces that effect. Instead of being a means to see through, these “windows” become a form in their own right.

At the same time, the work also has a social meaning: the artist believes that everyone is entitled to perspective, a prospect of a better life.

Isa Genzken chose the location for the windows carefully: near an entrance and exit in the most romantic and wild part of the park. Like follies, the bizarre structures in English landscape gardens, they surprise us and enhance our experience of the green surroundings.

German contemporary artist Isa Genzken is willing to risk everything again and again to create work that is completely new. Her oeuvre is full of autobiographical elements and subtle social commentaries. She freely uses a variety of media: sculptures, installations, films, videos, paintings, works on paper, collages, and photographs.
