Two figures for Middelheim

1993

Juan Muñoz

The “Two Figures for Middelheim,” high in the trees, wait for nothing and expect nothing. They have no legs, but are trapped in a straitjacket that resembles a sack. Their arms hang lifelessly, like the limbs of a rag doll.

Juan Muñoz has emphasized the helplessness of these bronze sculptures. His figures cannot move, cannot see, and cannot speak. And as if that situation were not tragic enough, he placed them unreachably high up in the trees, separated by a forest path. The gap is unbridgeable.

With these two figures high above the ground, fastened to tree trunks, Muñoz bridges the gap between sculpture, nature, and architecture. He has transformed nature into a dream image of a “green cathedral” populated by bizarre creatures.

Spanish artist Juan Muñoz described himself as a storyteller. “When I make a work, you can immediately see what it is; I have never succeeded in making an abstract work,” he said. From the mid-1980s, he began creating installations in which he placed objects and human-like figures in a variety of spaces.
