The sea inspired Henri Laurens to create a series of figures that are mobile like the waves. This stylized female figure is connected to the ocean wave below by fluid movements. Her upraised arm beckons the water.
The connection between humans and nature is central to Henri Laurens’s sculptures. Humans are not above nature, but part of it.
Henri Laurens was a French Cubist sculptor. He started with assemblages in wood and metal, and polychrome reliefs characterized by hard angles and edges. This changed from 1930 onwards, and he began to work with curved lines, powerful volumes, and sumptuous forms. His main motif was the female nude.
