Artiesteningang

2012

John Körmeling

On the occasion of the park’s expansion in 2012, John Körmeling created a pavilion for the new public entrance. With a nudge and a wink, he christened the work “Artists’ Entrance.”

The construction looks simultaneously futuristic and retro. The three slender pillars extend into a mushroom-shaped canopy inspired by 1950s gas stations. Körmeling calls it “a kind of flower” that molds itself to the whimsical shapes of the park.

In the center is a small, glassed-in space that can serve as a bar as well as an exhibition space for smaller works of art. On the canopy are names of artists whose work is included in the museum’s collection.

Dutch contemporary sculptor and architect John Körmeling takes a rather unorthodox approach to both architecture and the visual arts. He practices a kind of “conceptual” architecture that explores the boundaries of spatial planning, urban planning, and architecture. His work always displays a healthy dose of humor and daring.
