The minimalist structure of the artwork carves out a piece of the landscape: the open cube acts like the frame of a painting. On the edges of the cube are the English words “as,” “but,” and “there.” The artist often plays with language as a spatial element in his work.
Humans construct an environment that gives us something to hold onto, but that we also want to control. It seems as if the artist is searching here for a way to accommodate not only the rational intervention of human hands (the cube), but also the changing environment (the landscape).
Since the 1960s, American artist Peter Downsbrough has worked on a multifaceted oeuvre that includes sculpture, photography, books, and postcards. His innovative approach to space and language links his work to minimal and conceptual art.
