Heaven and Earth
2018
Adrien Tirtiaux
The work Heaven and Earth, 2018 consists of two parts: a scenario for the creation of the artwork, and the initial material execution of that scenario. The work is realized by pouring concrete into excavated molds in the earth: the location itself thus becomes the mold for this cast sculpture. The texture of the earth remains visible and becomes a part of the work.

Adrien Tirtiaux was trained as an architect. He often uses interaction and/or audience participation to realize or complete his projects. He works both as an autonomous artist and in the collective HOTEL CHARLEROI, which he founded in 2009. With his installations and constructions, he aims to capture and intervene in the relationship with the environment. In his sculptures, which often take on the forms of architecture, he does not aim to make a functional intervention, but rather to realize a possible (mental) new connection. His work has been seen in Manifesta (2008), IKOB (2014), and Martha Herford (2017).
Tirtiaux chose not to design a sculpture, but to let it emerge as a result of the process, as is characteristic of his practice. In this case, his aim is to connect the earth with (the view of) the sky. In a poetic sense, but also as a way to experience the museum landscape anew as a specific convergence of circumstances in space, time, and light.
