The Bridge Without A Name

2012

Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei built this bridge at the invitation of Middelheim Museum. It was a challenge: he had never built a bridge before. Because the artist is frugal with materials, he recycled an existing bridge from the art park. But in an entirely unique way. For “The Bridge Without A Name,” he replaced the original deck with planks that together form the contours of his homeland, China. The artist has both a problematic and passionate relationship with this country.

The bridge is difficult to walk on, reflecting the difficult relationship between Ai Weiwei and China. Or more broadly between the Chinese system and its people, or between China and the rest of the world.

“The Bridge Without A Name” spurs you to action. The uneven surface makes crossing the bridge difficult. This also sets your thoughts in motion and invites reflection.

In his own words, Chinese total artist Ai Weiwei is tinkering at the doors of art. He is a visual artist, poet, architect, curator … In his work, he seeks to challenge the powers that be and initiate a change of mentality in society.
