Proposta per un monumento
1961
Francesco Somaini
The contrast between the polished parts and the rough material is striking. According to the artist, this contrast symbolizes human nature. There seems to be a struggle going on between the dynamic smooth parts and the passive unpolished masses. However, the powerful verticality of the sculpture points to hope, like a rising flame: we will ultimately resolve our conflicts.

This sculpture is the culmination of a series in which Francesco Somaini elaborates on the same motif. The first designs and smaller works of art in bronze, iron, lead and silver date from 1957-58. In 1958 he created a large version in iron, and this sculpture in bronze concludes the series.
Italian sculptor Francesco Somaini experimented with different materials and techniques. Material is very important to his work, and also takes on symbolic significance. He took lessons from Giacomo Manzù and admired Hans Arp and Constantin Brancusi, but in the second half of the 20th century he developed his own abstract formal language.
