Setting

2019

Filip Vervaet

The four glass panels on their pedestal create an environment: a (garden) room with a concrete floor and colored windows. In one room is a vase sculpture, which is a combination of copies of Japanese, Egyptian, and Congolese storage jars: a fusion of three cultures. In the other room is a tree, but one the artist made in aluminum.

When you walk around “Setting,” you alternately see the real trees in the park, the vase sculpture, and the bare tree trunk. The window sometimes offers views of the interior and sometimes of the exterior, but it is never quite clear exactly what you are looking at.

In this work, Filip Vervaet explores the relationship between humans and nature in different ways.

One of the themes in Vervaet’s oeuvre is the malleability of nature. In his work we often see artificial representations of natural elements, such as the aluminum tree trunk. This ties in perfectly with the theme of urban wilderness, which explores how we shape and direct nature, as also happens here in the park.

The visual language of contemporary Belgian artist Filip Vervaet combines (art-)historical references with allusions to science fiction. He works with both traditional crafts and new techniques and materials. Important themes include the relationship between humans and nature, the malleability of nature, processes in sculpture, perception, and the subconscious.
